Cold War: Voices of Confrontation and Conciliation

Posted on May 3rd, 2012 · All Library News, New and Trial Resources, New Resources

UNSW Library now provides access to the Cold War: Voices of Confrontation and Conciliation collection available as part of Gale’s Archives Unbound database.

At the end of World War II, English author and journalist George Orwell used the term cold war in his essay “You and the Atomic Bomb”, published October 19, 1945, in the British newspaper Tribune.  Contemplating a world living in the shadow of the threat of nuclear warfare, he warned of a “peace that is no peace” which he called a permanent “cold war”, Orwell directly referred to that war as the ideological confrontation between the Soviet Union and the Western powers.  The first use of the term to describe the post-World War II geopolitical tensions between the USSR and its satellites and the United States and its western European allies is attributed to Bernard Baruch.  In a speech delivered on April 16, 1947, he stated, “Let us not be deceived: we are today in the midst of a cold war.”  This collection will provide a unique opportunity to read the recollections of many of the players in the Cold War.  These transcripts of oral recollections will assist scholars in understanding the motivations for conflict and conciliation.

LandScan Global Population Database

Posted on April 24th, 2012 · All Library News, New and Trial Resources, New Resources

UNSW Library now provides access to the LandScan Global Population Database.

At approximately 1 km resolution (30″ X 30″), LandScan is a high resolution global population distribution database and represents an ambient population (average over 24 hours).  The LandScan algorithm uses spatial data and imagery analysis technologies and a multi-variable dasymetric modeling approach to disaggregate census counts within an administrative boundary.  Since no single population distribution model can account for the differences in spatial data availability, quality, scale, and accuracy as well as the differences in cultural settlement practices, LandScan population distribution models are tailored to match the data conditions and geographical nature of each individual country and region.

New Trial resource – Ethnographic Video Online and Anthropology Online

Posted on March 19th, 2012 · All Library News, New and Trial Resources, Trial Resources

The Library is providing trial access to Ethnographic Video Online and Anthropology Online until 31 May 2012.

Alexander Street Anthropology is a comprehensive resource for the study of human culture and behaviour.  Featuring cross-searchable access to Ethnographic Video Online and Anthropology Online collections, Alexander Street Anthropology provides Anthropologists, Sociologists and cultural historians with an expansive and multifaceted survey of the discipline.  Researchers can explore a wide range of materials—from documentaries and field notes to written ethnographies and reference works.

Anthropology Online brings together a wide range of written ethnographies, field notes, seminal texts, memoirs, and contemporary studies, covering human behaviour the world over.  Upon completion the database will contain more than 100,000 pages of material in areas such as politics, economics, history, psychology, environmental studies and religion.

Ethnographic Video Online is a video encyclopedia of humanity and will contain more than 750 hours of classic and contemporary documentaries produced by leading video producers in the discipline; previously unpublished footage from working anthropologists and ethnographers in the field; and select feature films.  Wherever possible, videos will include accompanying field notes, liner notes, filmmaker biographies, related articles, study guides, and other context-enhancing, full-text materials.

We welcome your comments and feedback on this resource.
