Scientists, artists, lawyers, historians and social scientists will come together to trace the radical shifts in our understanding of the body &#8211; \u00a0and life itself &#8211; and investigate how these emergent realities influence our notion of being human while simultaneously challenging the relationship to the \u2018Other\u2019 that is living or semi-living.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Speakers include:<br \/>\n<strong>Dr Catherine Waldby<\/strong>, University of Sydney, whose research includes the Feminist-Marxist critique of the distribution and use of parts of bodies whether classified as \u201cgift\u201d or \u201cwaste\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>Dr Luigi Palombi,<\/strong> Australian National University, an expert on biotechnology patents in Australia, the European Union and the United States of America.\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Costello,<\/strong>writer, who discusses the hypocrisy of complex relations between the treatment of \u00a0animals,\u00a0<strong>Dr Ethan Blue<\/strong>, UWA &#8211; a historian whose research involves the prison system and relations between medicos and inmates;\u00a0<strong>Kathy High<\/strong>, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute: an artist who explores the Other animal and interspecies intimate relations\u00a0<strong>Dr Ionat Zurr<\/strong>, UWA &#8211; the Semi-Living point of view.\u00a0<strong>Dr Stuart Hodgetts<\/strong>, UWA &#8211; a research scientist\u2019s experience working with animals and artists in the labs \u00a0<strong>Dr Darren Jorgensen,<\/strong> UWA \u2013 surveys the use of the body within art history.<strong>Oron Catts <\/strong>SymbioticA Director will investigate the bioethics inherent within a number of biological art projects researched and developed within SymbioticA.<br \/>\nTo register interest email:\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:sym@symbiotica.uwa.edu.au\">sym@symbiotica.uwa.edu.au<\/a><br \/>\nWebsite to come: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.symbiotica.uwa.edu.au\/activities\/conferences\">http:\/\/www.symbiotica.uwa.edu.au\/activities\/conferences<\/a> &lt;https:\/\/mail.anhb.uwa.edu.au\/exchweb\/bin\/redir.asp?URL=<a href=\"http:\/\/www.symbiotica.uwa.edu.au\/activities\/conferences%3E\">http:\/\/www.symbiotica.uwa.edu.au\/activities\/conferences&gt;<\/a><br \/>\nSymposium Graphic Design by Paul Rayment<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Body, Art and Bioethics Friday 6 August 2010 A symposium exploring the culture and ethics of the use and ownership of living material, from the cell to the whole body, in art, science, law and philosophy.
