A second congress took place in Paris in 1937.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;text-align: -webkit-auto\">Interrupted by the Second World War, the congresses resumed in 1956, when<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;text-align: -webkit-auto\">the third congress was held in Venice. Until 2000 all congresses were held<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;text-align: -webkit-auto\">in Europe. An increasing interest in aesthetics and a greater concern for<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;text-align: -webkit-auto\">international communication has enlarged the geographical scope to include a<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;text-align: -webkit-auto\">global perspective. From frozen embryos<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;text-align: -webkit-auto\">and stem cells to purple and orange cauliflower to bio-printed organs, the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;text-align: -webkit-auto\">cultured cell is a living technological entity. Coming into existence<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;text-align: -webkit-auto\">through means of biological mimicry and selective breeding, how can these<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;text-align: -webkit-auto\">organisms be classified in Linnaean terms? Tissue culturing of plants can<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;text-align: -webkit-auto\">create a million molecularly identical plants from a small amount of stock.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;text-align: -webkit-auto\">Plants can be made from stems and leaves, assigning a new status to seeds.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;text-align: -webkit-auto\">In light of Walter Benjamin\u2019s seminal essay, \u201cThe Work of Art in the Age of<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;text-align: -webkit-auto\">Mechanical Reproduction,\u201d we now turn our attention to mechanical<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;text-align: -webkit-auto\">reproduction of living entities.
