How Did I Find My Word?

After realizing I had kept a couple of receipts from recent purchases I decided to give them some use. I have always thought of receipts as a way of getting to know someone. It tells you important information about a person. What things they like, what they eat, what they do on a daily basis. It is a personal piece every person on this planet shares.

Step 1

I collected 3 receipts I had at home from things I had recently bought. One was from IGA Supermarket, the second one was from a lunch place called The Gardens, and the third one was from Whole Harvest Market, a place where really healthy products can be bought.

Step 2

After I had my 3 receipts in hand, I took out my sketchbook and 3 pens to trace them, each on a different paper. I used mostly black, but also combined orange and green pens into random words to add some livelihood to the project.

Step 3

After I was done writing and copying the receipts, I started to cut. I cut out most of the words and numbers and pilled them together before placing them facing down separately on top of my laptop so someone random would be able to randomly pick any piece of paper they wanted.

Step 4

I asked Alex to pick a piece of paper and this is what it turned out to be! My number, or word, is:

1

ONE:

  • Number 1.
  • The lowest cardinal number. (there’s only room for one person)
  • A single person or thing. (they would straggle home in ones and twos)
  • Just one as opposed to any more or to none at all. (her one concern is to save her daughter)
  • Denoting a particular item of a pair or number of items. (electronics is one of his hobbies)
  • (One year old)
  • (One o’clock)
