Artist Statement

These are the artworks of my first experiment in relation to the word marble. After mind mapping and further exploring the word I decided to focus on the marble balls toy made out of glass. Throughout my experiment I have made artworks in the form of both photography and video. In the first stage I wanted to investigate the object I had, it was a marble ball and inside there was a colourful toothpaste shape, so to further explore I decided to break it to see what was inside. Then I took a photo of the broken pieces which became its own artwork, even though it was no longer a ball shape, some of the individual pieces had a part of that toothpaste shape and each piece was unique in its own way. I then moved onto the second stage of the experiment, after taking close photos of the pieces of glass, I had an idea to taped one of the pieces onto the lens of my iPhone. I then took photos and videos of random objects and went outside to my front yard, I also experimented with an unbroken marble as well. All the photos were blurry and some had the toothpaste shape interrupting the view, which made an interesting image from inside the marble, as it reminded me of a dream or memory. As I was filming it was getting darker and the streetlights were on and when I filmed it, it made a watery and cracking effect, then I used a different marble which made a sparkly effect, all the images are  aesthetically pleasing as it reminded me of calm sparkling water that the sun reflects off. When I took off the sticky tape I noticed the little details such as the fingerprints and decided to make artworks of the tape as well. In the third stage I decided to extend this experiment by making camera lens out of multiple marbles and I took videos with the marble lens around my house. The marbles made the view distorted and flipped, however there were still gaps between the marbles so it’s not a full marble view. In both the second and third stages I intended to make a unique experience through making photos and videos of what it was like to view the world from inside a marble ball toy.
