{"id":674,"date":"2019-01-22T15:26:03","date_gmt":"2019-01-22T22:26:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/clic\/?page_id=674"},"modified":"2019-01-24T04:42:17","modified_gmt":"2019-01-24T11:42:17","slug":"flat-white","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/clic\/archive\/nicole-hauser\/flat-white\/","title":{"rendered":"Flat White"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>flat white<\/p>\n<p><em>noun<\/em><\/p>\n<p>noun: <strong>flat white<\/strong>; plural noun: <strong>flat whites<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>a type of coffee made with espresso and hot steamed milk, but without the froth characteristic of a cappuccino.<\/p>\n<p>At first glance, this object appears to have little weight behind its meaning, being defined as \u201ca type of coffee made with espresso and hot steamed milk, but without the froth characteristic of a cappuccino.\u201d\u00a0 With a desire to extrapolate social, cultural, environmental and economic meaning from this Australian cup of coffee, I brainstormed in the form of a mind map.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/clic\/files\/2019\/01\/Flat-White-Mind-Map-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-859\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/clic\/files\/2019\/01\/Flat-White-Mind-Map-3-1024x580.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/clic\/files\/2019\/01\/Flat-White-Mind-Map-3-1024x580.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/clic\/files\/2019\/01\/Flat-White-Mind-Map-3-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/clic\/files\/2019\/01\/Flat-White-Mind-Map-3-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/clic\/files\/2019\/01\/Flat-White-Mind-Map-3.jpg 1242w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 890px) 100vw, 890px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Although Italian migrants brought Espresso to Australia after WWII, Australian\u2019s desire for a \u2018white\u2019 coffee saw the creation of the flat white<\/li>\n<li>Flat whites hold great economic possibilities as fast food outlets thrive \u2013 Capitalism<\/li>\n<li>Workers experience slave labour and wage exploitation<\/li>\n<li>In a social and business environment, coffee culture allows for human interaction and idea generation<\/li>\n<li>Environmental degradation and pollution through waste as well as animal cruelty<\/li>\n<li>Dissimilarly, the coffee can be used for fertiliser and compost<\/li>\n<li>Caffeine, energy and addiction<\/li>\n<li>Flat white as a standard paint colour in terms of design<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Developing this mind map further, I considered what other forms the concept of Flat White could take&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/clic\/files\/2019\/01\/IMG_4381.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1376\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/clic\/files\/2019\/01\/IMG_4381-1024x745.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"890\" height=\"648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/clic\/files\/2019\/01\/IMG_4381-1024x745.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/clic\/files\/2019\/01\/IMG_4381-300x218.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/clic\/files\/2019\/01\/IMG_4381-768x559.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/clic\/files\/2019\/01\/IMG_4381.jpeg 1242w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 890px) 100vw, 890px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I am excited to see how I can transform some of these ideas into experiments&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>flat white noun noun: flat white; plural noun: flat whites a type of coffee made with espresso and hot steamed milk, but without the froth characteristic of a cappuccino.
