{"id":1423,"date":"2021-04-15T08:50:06","date_gmt":"2021-04-14T22:50:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/mathssciencechampions\/?p=1423"},"modified":"2024-05-23T10:42:59","modified_gmt":"2024-05-23T00:42:59","slug":"building-engaging-presentations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/stemmchampions\/blog\/2021\/04\/building-engaging-presentations\/","title":{"rendered":"Building Engaging Presentations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">By Charuni Pathmeswaran <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, 19&nbsp;female&nbsp;PhD researchers&nbsp;from different backgrounds came together for a workshop on building engaging presentations.&nbsp;We all had one thing in common: an interest in inspiring young girls to pursue careers in STEM.&nbsp;It&nbsp;had&nbsp;been a year since I&nbsp;had&nbsp;attended an&nbsp;in-person&nbsp;workshop. Needless to say, just being in a room full of enthusiastic young women was a great experience for me!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The session was facilitated by Jo O\u2019Reilly,&nbsp;one of Australia&#8217;s leading communication and presentation skills trainer.&nbsp;Jo has a Bachelor of Arts\/ Bachelor of Social Studies from the University of Sydney and studied for a diploma of Operatic Art at the NSW Conservatorium of Music. The&nbsp;energy she radiated throughout the workshop was contagious to say the least.&nbsp;She was so engaging that it left us wanting more.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/mathssciencechampions\/files\/2021\/04\/image-1-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/stemmchampions\/files\/2021\/04\/image-1-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/stemmchampions\/files\/2021\/04\/image-1-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/stemmchampions\/files\/2021\/04\/image-1-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/stemmchampions\/files\/2021\/04\/image-1-1536x864.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/stemmchampions\/files\/2021\/04\/image-1.jpeg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Jo encourages us to radiate positive vibes among ourselves. This was just one of many mini exercises we did during the workshop \ud83d\ude42<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The workshop involved a lot of&nbsp;self-reflection.&nbsp;We were asked to reflect on the types of visibility that make us comfortable and those which make us feel uncomfortable.&nbsp;Jo pointed out that visibility is not about you but instead is about what the audience sees. This was a new perspective for me.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We&nbsp;also&nbsp;discussed about how we felt moments&nbsp;before addressing an audience. The consensus in the room was that we all feel anxious in the moments leading up to giving a talk.&nbsp;Jo pointed out that nerves&nbsp;are a sign that you care&nbsp;and that gives you an extra push to perform better.&nbsp;She also reminded us to be kind to ourselves and to not let the inner critique get in the way of our&nbsp;performance.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jo also spoke about preparing for impactful delivery.&nbsp;For maximum impact, there&nbsp;must&nbsp;be congruence between content,&nbsp;physicality,&nbsp;and voice.&nbsp;We also discussed different communication styles and the importance of maintaining meaningful eye contact.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/mathssciencechampions\/files\/2021\/04\/image-2-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/stemmchampions\/files\/2021\/04\/image-2-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/stemmchampions\/files\/2021\/04\/image-2-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/stemmchampions\/files\/2021\/04\/image-2-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/stemmchampions\/files\/2021\/04\/image-2-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/stemmchampions\/files\/2021\/04\/image-2.jpeg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Getting to know each other during the lunch break: We talked about our research, what we like to do for fun, and navigating our PhDs during a pandemic \ud83d\ude42<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To conclude the workshop,&nbsp;we did a storytelling exercise. Each of us was asked to narrate a story and link it to the message we would like to convey to&nbsp;young&nbsp;girls.&nbsp;Jo emphasized the importance of talking about not just&nbsp;what&nbsp;you are&nbsp;doing but also&nbsp;why&nbsp;you are&nbsp;doing it.&nbsp;Some of the messages conveyed included <strong>stepping out of&nbsp;one\u2019s&nbsp;comfort zone<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>being&nbsp;okay&nbsp;with&nbsp;not knowing&nbsp;what you want to do<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>taking time to&nbsp;find what you love,<\/strong>&nbsp;and <strong>not being afraid of change<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;It was&nbsp;so inspiring to hear what the other women in the room had to say.
