On Thursday the 27th\u00a0of June,\u00a0five\u00a0of our\u00a0UNSW Women in Maths and Science Champions,\u00a0Nicole Green,\u00a0Raisa Rafique,\u00a0Yulian\u00a0Cao, Emily\u00a0Vohralik\u00a0and Sarah\u00a0Topfer\u00a0had the amazing opportunity to be\u00a0judges for the Sydney Girls High School Science\u00a0conference.\u00a0The conference is an annual\u00a0competition\u00a0where Year 9 students present the outcomes of a research project they have conducted\u00a0to\u00a0an expert panel.\u00a0It is a unique opportunity for students to interact with STEM professionals\u00a0and for STEM professionals to be inspired by the young minds of the future.<\/p>\n

Sydney Girls High School Science Conference.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The champions helped judge 25 research projects\u00a0on the night,\u00a0pre-selected from a pool of\u00a0over 150\u00a0written project reports.\u00a0Judging occurred in two stages \u2013 a\u00a0preliminary\u00a0stage where students were split into six groups and presented their project to a judge followed by a final stage where the best student from each group\u00a0presented\u00a0their project\u00a0for a second time in one of two finals and two\u00a0winners were determined.<\/p>\n

Like any scientific investigation, the judging\u00a0criteria\u00a0for the students\u2019 project\u00a0included\u00a0major considerations such as\u00a0experimental design\u00a0and\u00a0data analysis. It also\u00a0focused on the\u00a0ability of the student to communicate their ideas\u00a0and demonstrate\u00a0understanding of topic and presentation.\u00a0\u00a0The latter was a\u00a0particular highlight\u00a0for the\u00a0UNSW Women Champions\u00a0who were able to\u00a0provide students with\u00a0valuable\u00a0feedback\u00a0based on their science communication training as part of the UNSW Champions program.<\/p>\n

Early career researcher and UNSW Science Champion Yulian\u00a0Cao was particularly impressed by some of the unique scientific questions posed by the students including \u201cIs there a relationship between the concentration of plastic in water and how the water absorbs or loses heat?<\/i>\u201d and \u201cThe effect of different types of moisturisers on skin hydration<\/i>.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe student\u2019s\u00a0experiment design and data analysis\u00a0strongly\u00a0support their proposed topics; their presentation and communication skills\u00a0were\u00a0good\u00a0and they even\u00a0answered\u00a0all\u00a0judges\u2019 questions promptly.\u201d said\u00a0Yulian. \u201cThis is an amazing accomplishment considering many experienced scientists find it challenging to perform well in all these areas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another\u00a0UNSW Women Champion\u00a0also commented, \u201cThis\u00a0has been\u00a0a chance for me to learn from the high school students. They did very good work!\u201d<\/p>\n

Well done to all the students who presented on the night and the UNSW Champions look forward to next year\u2019s conference.<\/p>\n
