Her interests led her to a degree in microbiology at Hazara University, Pakistan then a job in poultry research organization where she explored how the bacteria\u00a0Pseudomonas aeruginosa\u00a0caused disease in chickens\u00a0and\u00a0finally,\u00a0a PhD in School of Optometry and Vision Science exploring the same bacteria\u00a0P. aeruginosa\u00a0which could also cause eye infections in humans. When not researching, Mahjabeen can be found taking photos of flowers or curled up with a good book.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>You are currently doing a PhD. What does your project focus on?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>My PhD investigates\u00a0how bacteria infect the human eye and how it can be treated. This is important as bacteria are the most common cause of eye infections in people who wear contact lens (and even those who don\u2019t wear contact lens). By understanding these bacteria, we can ways to treat bacterial eye infections with current antibiotics.<\/p>\n<p><b>What led you to choosing a career in science?<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_718\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-718\" style=\"width: 447px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-718\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/mathssciencechampions\/files\/2019\/09\/Mahjabeen-plates.jpg\" alt=\"Results of some of Mahjabeen's experiments\" width=\"447\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/stemmchampions\/files\/2019\/09\/Mahjabeen-plates.jpg 447w, https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/stemmchampions\/files\/2019\/09\/Mahjabeen-plates-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 447px) 85vw, 447px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-718\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Results of some of Mahjabeen&#8217;s experiments<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I remember visiting a doctor as a child and being\u00a0so impressed at\u00a0how the\u00a0doctor understood why a person had become sick and could diagnose disease and prescribe medicine. This influenced me a lot and led me towards an interest in microbiology. As I grew up, I realised that by choosing a career in research, I could start to answer questions still unknown in microbiology.<\/p>\n<p><b>What is your favourite part of doing research?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The interpretation of my research results is definitely the most interesting thing for me as well as explaining research to others. I really enjoy trying to explain \u2018what is what?\u2019 and \u2018how is how?\u2019 It\u00a0not only helps\u00a0people understand\u00a0research,\u00a0but it helps me generate new ideas.<\/p>\n<p><b>What are you up to when you are not\u00a0<\/b><b>doing\u00a0 research<\/b><b>?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I love\u00a0to read. Yes, I know this is strange considering research involves a lot of reading but\u00a0away\u00a0from research, I love to read novels and poetry. I am also a keen photographer and I like to take photos of flowers wherever I go. I recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/UNSWOptom\/photos\/a.328866367317720\/943178229219861\/?type=3&amp;theater\">captured some amazing orchids photos\u00a0 during a trip to Singapore<\/a>.\u00a0 I also like dress designing. A career in science and research is an amazing\u00a0opportunity to\u00a0have the freedom to think outside the box and use these thoughts to contribute towards a better society. Not only that, scientific researchers themselves are diverse individuals and an amazing community to be part of.
