Zahra Tajbakhsh is! Growing up i<\/i><i>n Fars province<\/i><i>, Iran, Zahra always excelled academically in science subjects, so much that her family nickname was Dr Zahra. Years later, Zahra\u00a0<\/i><i>used her skills to become an optometrist, helping treat people with a range of eye conditions. Curious<\/i><i>l<\/i><i>y however got the better of her and she decided to pursue the dream of becoming Dr Zahra, taking up a PhD in Australia. She now works at the School of Optometry at UNSW, studying how immune cells in the eye cause allergies<\/i><i>.\u202f<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>You\u2019re a\u00a0<\/b><b>vision science<\/b><b>\u00a0researcher<\/b><b>.\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>What lead you down this path?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>During\u00a0elementary and high\u00a0school,\u00a0I\u00a0was great\u00a0at\u00a0science-based\u00a0subjects like\u00a0chemistry, biology\u00a0and\u00a0maths\u00a0and\u00a0thus I knew I wanted a career related to science.\u00a0My family\u00a0were very supportive of this and even used to\u00a0call me\u00a0\u2018Dr Zahra\u2019.\u00a0However,\u00a0when I passed the university entrance exam,\u00a0I didn\u2019t\u00a0actually know\u00a0what type of science I wanted to pursue so\u00a0I selected the optometry\u00a0simply\u00a0based on\u00a0the fact that it received a high credit score and I had one.<\/p>\n<p>After I\u00a0graduated\u00a0as an optometrist, I realised how\u00a0useful\u00a0I could be\u00a0for people who\u00a0were\u00a0suffering from eye-related diseases. Whenever my patients came back to me and talked about how\u00a0happy they\u00a0were\u00a0with\u00a0their\u00a0treatments, I felt so proud and happy.\u00a0However,\u00a0I also found myself wanting\u00a0to\u00a0go beyond just treating patients and\u00a0actually\u00a0increase\u00a0the\u00a0knowledge in the field.\u00a0So,\u00a0I took a big leap and moved\u00a010,623km\u00a0away from my family and friends\u00a0in Iran\u00a0to\u00a0do a PhD in Australia.\u00a0It was a\u00a0really big\u00a0decision,\u00a0but\u00a0I\u00a0love\u00a0learning new things\u00a0every\u00a0day\u00a0and\u00a0getting closer to actually becoming \u2018Dr Zahra\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><b>What is your PhD\u00a0<\/b><b>project\u00a0<\/b><b>about?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>My PhD project focuses on allergies which affect the eye. These are known as ocular allergies. Ocular allergies are a problem because they are increasing in prevalence\u00a0worldwide\u00a0and\u00a0all the\u00a0current treatments\u00a0for these allergies\u00a0only provide\u00a0sufferers with\u00a0temporary\u00a0relief.\u00a0In my PhD,\u00a0I am\u00a0studying\u00a0the special immune cells responsible for initiating\u00a0allergies in\u00a0the\u00a0eye. I find it\u00a0interesting\u00a0and love the feeling that\u00a0I am adding new information to the\u00a0scientific world.<\/p>\n<p><b>What do you\u00a0<\/b><b>get up to when you are not doing\u00a0<\/b><b>research?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0love music and\u00a0have\u00a0just\u00a0started to learn\u00a0an\u00a0instrument\u00a0called\u00a0the Sitar.\u00a0It is a\u00a0traditional\u00a0Iranian instrument.\u00a0I\u00a0also\u00a0like to read philosophy and poetry\u00a0books, hang\u00a0out with friends and\u00a0watch\u00a0movies.<\/p>\n<p><b>What are your plans<\/b><b>\u00a0after you finish your PhD<\/b><b>?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0would like to\u00a0continue to do research, probably with\u00a0research and development\u00a0companies.\u00a0I think the important part of the\u00a0research is to be able to\u00a0translate\u00a0results\u00a0into products and services which can be used by people.<\/p>\n<p><b>The UNSW Women\u2019s in Maths and Science program is all about sharing science with the public, particularly the younger generation.\u00a0<\/b><b>What<\/b><b>\u2019s<\/b><b>\u00a0your message to the younger generation<\/b><b>\u00a0about science<\/b><b>?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0encourage\u00a0young\u00a0people to look at science and science related careers and\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0think that they are too hard.\u00a0Whilst I have definitely\u00a0\u00a0found it hard sometimes\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0worth\u00a0persisting.
