Shape your study with a double degree

You’re not alone if you’re feeling unsure about picking the right degree. There are so many options, and often you’re left wondering if your study choices will be what’s right for the future-you.

Our advice would be to follow your passions and combine them with your interests and strengths. If you’re having trouble deciding what you’d like to study, consider giving yourself some flexibility and investigate UNSW’s extensive range of double degrees.

Double degrees give you greater choice to either gain an expansive breadth of knowledge or a greater depth of knowledge. But what does this mean exactly?

With a double degree, you have the flexibility to shape your learning around your goals. It may be important to keep your options open while studying so as your learning progresses, you’re able to continue exploring possibilities for your future. A double degree enables this, you can combine subject areas across the disciplines and build up a broad skill set and knowledge base that’s suited to a variety of professional contexts.

In other circumstances, a double degree is an opportunity to combine an existing passion with a study ambition, and the result can be an enriching and rewarding learning experience that supports a blend of personal pursuits with graduation goals.

In both these instances, multi-disciplinary double degrees enable you to link subjects from different areas of study, expose yourself to different ways of thinking, and create your ideal combination of knowledge. A few examples of multi-disciplinary double degrees include Design/Media (PR & Advertising), Economics/Science, Music/Science, or Fine Arts/Law.

If you’re passionate about pursuing one subject area of study and have a specific path in mind for your future, a cross-disciplinary double degree will enable you to immerse yourself into your area of interest. The benefit is that you can be thoughtful and targeting when selecting your degree combination, to ensure that your exposure to learning opportunities and skills development are structured to give you a deeper foundation of knowledge that you can then draw from once you graduate. A few examples of cross-disciplinary double degrees include Data Science/Advanced Maths, Commerce/Economics, or Psychology/Criminology.

Whichever path you choose, across our eight faculties you will find the double degree that’s right for you, while building a broad skill set, developing the ability to confidently approach challenges across a range of contexts, and gaining a multi-dimensional view across your studies.

At UNSW we know that the smallest of decisions may send you in unpredictable and incredible directions. Don’t feel that your career-path is necessarily defined by what you study now, rather investigate how a UNSW double degree can help you to build a broad skill set and strengthen your intellectual agility, so that once you graduate you’re greater prepared to face unique opportunities and the careers of the future.
