101 Guide: Applying to UNSW via UAC for 2020

Applying to university can be a complex process, with several steps to follow. We want to help make it as easy as possible for you, so here is everything you need to know about applying to UNSW for admission in 2020.

The UAC process for 2020 admissions

All undergraduate applications to UNSW from Australian citizens, permanent residents and New Zealand citizens are processed by the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). And the good news is that it’s really easy to apply.

Just visit the apply section of the UAC website and you can nominate up to five degrees you’d like to study, in order of your preference. Your first preference should be your most desired degree and then you should list four other degrees that you’d be happy to study if you don’t get your first preference.

What about Guaranteed Entry?

Our Guaranteed Entry personalised preference pages will be released to applicants in early October, and then updated with a Guaranteed Entry status for each UNSW preference, as soon as results are made available to UAC by each state. For NSW, ACT and VIC students, UNSW Guaranteed Entry offers will be released in December Round 2 on Monday, 23 December 2019.

QLD, SA, NT, TAS, WA and IB Students:

We will receive your results after the December Round 2 deadline, therefore you will be eligible for Guaranteed Entry in January Round 1 on Friday, 10 January 2020. Don’t worry, you will not be disadvantaged simply because your results are available later.

UNSW Scholarship Applications

Successful applicants for scholarships based purely on ATAR (like our Scientia or AAA scholarships) will receive offers as soon as their results are available. As above, IB students and students from QLD, SA, NT, TAS and WA will receive their offer when their results become available.

Cut-offs and Adjustment Factors

What will the cut-offs be for 2020?

Please visit the Guaranteed Entry website to see the selection ranks for 2020.

How many adjustment factors can I get?

The maximum number of adjustment factors an applicant can receive is 10 from all UNSW admission schemes including HSC Plus, the ACCESS Scheme, the Elite Athletes, Performers and Leaders (EAPL) program, AAA scholars and Gateway.

Additional Entry Requirements

It’s a good idea to check if your preferred degree has any extra entry requirements (aka Additional Selection Criteria). This might be a separate application, interview, audition or test. If you don’t complete these, you won’t be able to get an offer to that degree. You can quickly find out if your degree has any extra entry requirements by using the UNSW Find a Degree tool. Every degree lists any extra entry requirements.

Prerequisites and Assumed Knowledge

You’ve probably heard of the term ‘prerequisites’. If not, don’t worry – we don’t have prerequisites for entry to UNSW – but, we sometimes assume that you will have completed certain subjects in the HSC. We call this Assumed Knowledge.

To see if your preferred degree has any Assumed Knowledge, use our Find a Degree tool. What are you supposed to do if you haven’t completed an Assumed Knowledge subject for your degree?  First, don’t panic. Second, consider how important that subject may be to the degree. If your answer is, “I hate maths” perhaps an Engineering degree may not be the right degree for you. Third, consider completing a UNSW Bridging Course – these are short courses run before semester starts to help bring you up to speed in areas like Maths, Physics and Chemistry.

When will I find out if I get an offer?

The majority of high school leaver offers will be issued in December Round 2, January Round 1 and January Round 2, once ATAR results (or equivalent qualifications) are released.

Online via myUNSW. You will receive a personalised offer page with information on how to accept your offer and the deadline to accept. Offers must be accepted by the due date.

UNSW Faculty staff will be available to provide advice to students during the enrolment period and the Enrolment Support Centre can assist students with acceptance and enrolment queries.
