UNSW DOUBLE DEGREES: FUTURE-PROOFING CAREERS

As a parent, you play an important and trusted role in supporting your child to choose the right study path.

We encourage students to follow their passions and combine them with their interests and strengths. With so many degree options available to students, a double degree provides the flexibility to pursue varying learning streams simultaneously, and this doesn’t mean double the time or workload. With a UNSW double degree students don’t have to lock in their major immediately, it’s only after twelve months of learning that that this decision is made, giving students the time to clearly define their study goals before making a commitment.

Double degrees give students greater choice to either gain an expansive breadth of knowledge or a greater depth of knowledge. But what does this mean exactly?

Multi-Disciplinary Double Degrees

With a double degree, students have the flexibility to shape their learning around their goals and keep their options open. Your child will have more time to fine-tune their educational focus as their learning progresses and they discover the subjects that resonate with them the most. A double degree allows students to combine subject areas across the disciplines to build up a broad skill set and knowledge base that’s suited to a variety of professional contexts.

In other circumstances, a double degree is an opportunity to combine an existing passion with a study ambition. The result can be an enriching and rewarding learning experience that supports a blend of personal pursuits with graduation goals.

In both these instances, multi-disciplinary double degrees will enable your child to link subjects from different areas of study and learn different ways of thinking. A few examples of multi-disciplinary double degrees include Design/Media (PR & Advertising), Economics/Science, Music/Science, or Fine Arts/Law.

Cross-Disciplinary Double Degrees

If your child has a specific path in mind for their future, a cross-disciplinary double degree will enable them to immerse themselves in their area of interest. Your child can select a degree combination that ensures their exposure to learning opportunities and skills development are structured to give them a deeper foundation of knowledge. A few examples of cross-disciplinary double degrees include Data Science/Advanced Maths, Commerce/Economics, or Psychology/Criminology.

At UNSW we know that the smallest of decisions may send your child in unpredictable and incredible directions. Your child’s career path isn’t necessarily defined by what they study now. A double degree will not only enhance your child’s learning experience, it can also amount to greater career options upon graduation. Your child will develop a broad skill set and strengthen their intellectual agility, in turn preparing them for the careers of the future.
