{"id":221,"date":"2018-01-08T17:30:43","date_gmt":"2018-01-08T06:30:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unswpride.wordpress.com\/?p=221"},"modified":"2018-01-08T18:08:58","modified_gmt":"2018-01-08T07:08:58","slug":"how-to-make-friends-at-unsw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/studentlife\/blog\/2018\/01\/how-to-make-friends-at-unsw\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Make Friends at UNSW"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear new kids,<\/p>\n<p>So, you\u2019ve just come out of the comfortable bubble that is high school and now you\u2019re facing the daunting task of entering the biggest, most exciting school there is: university.<\/p>\n<p>You probably already have a couple of goals\u00a0in mind, and one of those goals\u00a0is almost certainly\u00a0meeting new people and making friends.<\/p>\n<p>In theory, making new friends\u00a0will be enjoyable but, in reality, it\u2019s an ordeal\u00a0for people\u00a0who have difficulty adapting to new situations. You simply have to\u00a0make some friends.<\/p>\n<p>Feeling disconnected when you start university is a given considering you might not\u00a0know anyone. But\u00a0developing a network of friends and acquaintances on campus should be taken seriously \u2013 <strong>a necessity<\/strong>, if you want to succeed. Establishing a social network at university is\u00a0vital for your happiness and mental health but it&#8217;s also important when it comes to\u00a0efficient, effective\u00a0studying habits.<\/p>\n<p>However, making friends\u00a0can be very challenging to accomplish. You\u2019ll need to be proactive and dedicated and go\u00a0out of your way to make friends. You also need to maintain a positive approach when doing it.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Too long didn\u2019t read?<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>You\u2019re going to have to get out of your comfort zone and find a way to talk to people. <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>How? Here\u2019s the go.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: this \u2018How To\u2019 won\u2019t be explaining how to perform basic human interactions like starting a conversation.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong style=\"line-height: 1.7\">1. Attend O-Week events, faculty welcomes and information sessions.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>These are typically held just before the start of the semester during or around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/1799824690274343\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Orientation Week<\/a>\u00a0(aka O-Week).<\/p>\n<p>ATTEND O-WEEK. IT IS THE BEST. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"O-Week 2017\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cyfczhdI3CU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>You are bound to meet other new students there who are in the same boat as you.<\/p>\n<p><em>Don&#8217;t be shy. Don&#8217;t be afraid<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Try to strike up a conversation with someone. You can always leave if the event \/ session is too much for your introverted self to\u00a0endure. But you should\u00a0at least GO.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>2. Have I mentioned Societies? Join as many as possible.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>UNSW (specifically the student organisation \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arc.unsw.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arc<\/a>\u2019 ) supports nearly\u00a03<strong>00 clubs and societies<\/strong> by providing funding, training and resources. Joining a society is a great opportunity for you\u00a0to develop a social life outside of class. From my knowledge, there\u2019s a society for literally anything \u2013 no matter how niche or popular your interests are. Some of these are advertised by the university, others may slip under the radar and take a bit of seeking out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/1799824690274343\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">To save trouble in the future, you can check out most society stands during O-Week<\/a>. Many different clubs and societies set up stalls to give new students the opportunity to talk to existing members and sign up. For anyone passionate about film I highly recommend this society.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>3. Embrace these opportunities!\u00a0Exchange timetables, exchange phone numbers, <strong>add each other on Facebook<\/strong>, whatever. Getting friendly\u00a0will come in handy\u00a0when assessments that involve group work come around &#8211; and trust me, <strong>they will<\/strong>. You can scope out likely friends or group members and get to learn a bit more about the people you\u2019re with.<\/p>\n<p>Also, if you see people in multiple classes, then it is reasonable to assume that they are studying for the same degree as you. In that case, you\u2019re likely to see them on a regular basis so it would be worthwhile making an effort to get to know them. <strong>Just make sure you\u2019re not weird in going about it.<\/strong>\u00a0The person sitting alone next to you is\u00a0most likely feeling awkward as well, so introduce yourself. Who knows, you might even become friends.<\/p>\n<p>And for the savvy, career-minded professionals out there, remember\u00a0it\u2019s important to network with future business associates who are interested in the same things you are &#8211; ie, people doing the same degree as you &#8211; both for now and into the future.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>5. Check out the Peer Mentoring programs.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Being part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/student.unsw.edu.au\/peermentoring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peer Mentoring program<\/a> gives you the opportunity\u00a0to attend a range of social events, helping you\u00a0meet and mix with other first year students. You also benefit from hearing how others are managing their transition to university and will get the chance to consult with a more experienced student (the mentor) which is great because settling in at university is definitely made easier by talking to\u00a0someone who has travelled the road before.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>6. I guess, remember to be yourself?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There are approximately 55,000 students on campus from all over the world. You are encouraged to express yourself, explore your creativity and be whoever you want to be.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, <strong>you can let your freak flag fly<\/strong>.
