The 2018 ACUADS Conference will be held in Perth, Western Australia on the 27th and 28th of September. The conference will be co-hosted by Curtin University, Edith Cowan University and North Metropolitan TAFE in conjunction with UAMA (University Art Museums Australia).

The 2018 ACUADS conference will consider Art and Design in Transition;

The Guardian remarked last year, ‘there has been more change in the public sphere in the last 20 years than in the previous two centuries’.[1]Politics now struggles to keep pace with the social media revolution, and the aesthetic realm is now more politically charged than ever.  And these same upheavals in media and communications are overturning the very institution of the university within society.  What is to be the true purpose of the university in this new landscape and how might it best serve the needs of a society that increasingly sees its considered contemplation and expertise as irrelevant, or even an elitist threat? The great experiment of bringing art within the halls of the University has met new challenges as society shifts – as the needs of the wider community undergo seismic change it is no longer possible to rely on traditional approaches to teaching and learning within art and design schools. Against this restless and precarious backdrop, this conference takes pause to consider possible strategies for art and design education to transition meaningfully alongside the emerging needs of society. So, what are the new concerns and questions art and design are asked to address?  In what ways might art and design form new and unexpected partnerships with other disciplines? Or should art and design instead consolidate their disciplinary uniqueness?  In a world where artificial intelligence and robotics are expected to overthrow long-held beliefs about employment, skills and human agency, what role might empathy and emotion in art and design bring to our immanent future?

We invite papers from academics, art teachers and postgraduate students on topics relating to Transition and its need and use within contemporary Art and Design practice and pedagogy. Papers and roundtable proposals are sought that address topics including, but not limited to:

  • Transition in studio practice – strategies for creative practice
  • Transition through collaboration – collaboration within the academy and/or with industry
  • Transition in learning and teaching – work integrated learning, online delivery and quality
  • Transition and the funding imperative – efficiencies and opportunities
  • Transition and the gallery – curation and collecting – museums and galleries
  • Transition within Art and Design – the nexus of Art and Design
  • Transition in the public sphere – Art and Design in the public sphere, Design in public and public Art

We invite abstract submissions for individual 20-minute papers, as well as proposals for panel discussions, and other modes of presentation. We also invite graduate researchers, and particularly encourage interdisciplinary and cross-cultural submissions



Abstract submissions should comprise 2 pages as follows:

  1. Cover sheet: Paper title, author(s), affiliation, phone, email, brief biographical details (100 words). Please indicate if you are willing to act as a referee of abstracts and whether you wish to have the paper refereed. Please indicate if you are eligible for a Postgraduate Scholarship (see below)
  2. Abstract: Paper title, 250 words, up to 5 key words


Please submit to via by Friday the 15thof June, 2018. The conference committee will advise authors of the acceptance or otherwise by Friday 29thof June, 2018.


Postgraduate Scholarships

Three Scholarships of $500, funded by ACUADS are available for HDR students. Eligible students (full-time HDR, <$40,000 annual income) may put funds towards registration, accommodation and/or travel costs. Recipients will be selected from papers marked eligible. Successful recipients will be notified by Friday 29thof June.

Accepted papers that are nominated for refereeing will be submitted to the Conference organisers for ‘double-blind’ peer review. Papers that successfully undergo the double –blind refereeing process will be published on the ACUADS conference website.

Completed papers to be submitted by 5pm Monday 22ndof October, 2018.

Refereeing guidelines
All papers are read first by the Conference convener, then sent to two referees (blind-peer reviewers), who will complete a referee report and make suggestions regarding the suitability for the conference publication, editing, reworking or development of the paper.
The recommendations will be forwarded to the author for attention before the paper is finally accepted for the Conference publication.
