{"id":1133,"date":"2012-05-15T00:42:08","date_gmt":"2012-05-15T07:42:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/tiic\/?page_id=1133"},"modified":"2012-05-15T00:42:08","modified_gmt":"2012-05-15T07:42:08","slug":"glenn-dcruz-and-dirk-de-bruyn","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/tiic\/transdisciplinary-imaging-conference-2012-2\/speakers-2012\/glenn-dcruz-and-dirk-de-bruyn\/","title":{"rendered":"Glenn D&#8217;Cruz and Dirk de Bruyn"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Click if You Like This, or <strong>OCCUPY<\/strong> as Spectacle: Situationism and a Technological Derive.<\/h1>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>The spectacle is not a collection of images; it is a social relation between people that is mediated by images (The Society of the Spectacle, Thesis 4)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Guy Debord<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This performative, multi-media lecture re-reads Guy Debord\u2019s book, <em>The Society of the Spectacle<\/em> (1967) with reference to the global Occupy movement, and the role social media and the Internet play in the facilitation and hindrance of this recent form of political activism. Debord claims that all \u2018having\u2019 \u2014 that is, all forms of accumulating capital \u2014 \u2018derives its immediate prestige and its ultimate purpose from appearances\u2019, and that individual reality, which is shaped by social forces, can \u2018appear only if it is not actually real (Debord, thesis 18).\u2019 Using the multiple functions and staggering proliferation of various image making technologies used to record and represent OCCUPY actions as a starting point, we respond to Debord\u2019s proposition by examining the ways his analysis of the spectacle both enables and impedes a thorough critique of social media as a spectacular technology <em>par excellence<\/em>. Part reflective essay, part critical analysis, and part performance, \u2018Click if You Like This\u2019 connects various situationist strategies of \u2018artistic interference\u2019 \u2014 such as the <em>d\u00e9rive <\/em>and <em>d\u00e9tournement<\/em> \u2014 with expanded cinema in order to generate a series of questions and provocations about the politics of place, the degradation of social space, networked images and the ubiquity of contemporary \u2018spectacular\u2019 technologies, which have colonized all forms of everyday life.
