{"id":1202,"date":"2012-05-15T00:46:02","date_gmt":"2012-05-15T07:46:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/tiic\/?page_id=1202"},"modified":"2012-05-15T00:46:02","modified_gmt":"2012-05-15T07:46:02","slug":"tom-schofield","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.unsw.edu.au\/tiic\/transdisciplinary-imaging-conference-2012-2\/speakers-2012\/tom-schofield\/","title":{"rendered":"Tom Schofield"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>Machine Autobiographies for Art Making<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The terms \u2018interference\u2019 and \u2018noise\u2019 are often used interchangeably. \u2018Interference\u2019 however, assumes a subject &#8211; object relationship into which another can intrude and it is this relationship itself which differentiates it from \u2019noise&#8217;. In a system of transmission from one entity to another, any data outside the <em>intended <\/em>message is noise. It is data without <em>meaning <\/em>but only <em>to <\/em>the users of the system. Noise, read differently is the data given by the machines about themselves. In other words the difference between interference and noise is a question of meta-physical <em>stance<\/em>. This is particularly significant in its relation to histories of media and technology. Friedrich Kittler describes a parallel written media history authored by machines themselves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The cut of the stylus to the wax cylinder, the colour of celluloid crystals. This mark making forms a corpus of written history which exists alongside the human &#8220;commentary&#8221; on such history. It is this inscription that forms an alternative to media history as a mere eulogy of technology. This inscription is also an incantation which brings forth worlds, which <em>gives <\/em>(das gibt).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">These other histories, inscribed as they are into ancient and contemporary media are gradually losing their voices to decay in the same way that the European climate once silenced papyrus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This paper will consider the implications of producing artworks which adopt these dying histories.
