\nMetamorphoses: Transformations, Transgressions

Call for papers
\nThis conference aims to engage with postgraduates and early career
\nresearchers on points of convergence among the humanities and social
\nscience disciplines to discuss the concept of \u2018metamorphosis\u2019, its mythic
\nechoes and its contemporary imaginings.<\/p>\n
>From Ovid to Hans Christian Anderson to Kafka, literal depictions of
\nmetamorphoses dominate cultural discourse and permeate our currencies of
\nstorytelling. Yet metamorphoses also evoke liminal spaces and becomings,
\nstraddling one realm and others simultaneously. Presenters are invited to
\ninvestigate metamorphic incidents of rupture and explore what possibilities
\nmight be found at these intersections of embodiment, spatiality and
\ntemporality.<\/p>\n
Submissions are anticipated to look at different ways in which bodies
\ninterface with transgression and transformation. Particularly how these
\nfrictions, desires and intensities are expressed through shifts in our identities,
\nour poetics and our politics. Both theoretical and performance-based
\nexplorations will be included in the symposium.<\/p>\n
Topics may include (but are not limited to): \u2022constructing masculinities in
\ncontemporary Australian media discourse \u2022representing the past: legitimacy,
\nhistorical narratives, historiographies \u2022feminisms and pornography:
\ntransforming representations of sexualities \u2022somatechnics, technologies and
\nbody modification practices \u2022staging the classics in contemporary Australian
\ntheatre \u2022affect and laughter: refiguring the carnival \u2022apocalyptic futurities:
\npreoccupations in film and literature \u2022trans identities and gender pluralism
\n\u2022economies of difference: post-colonial becomings \u2022stripping the
\nheterosexual matrix: queer reformulations of burlesque \u2022Rudd as \u2018Howard
\nlite\u2019: transformations and constancies in the Australian political landscape
\n\u2022consuming the flesh: changes in the reception of bodies and aesthetics
\n\u2022textual violence: depicting sado-masochism \u2022pathos, catharsis and
\ndirections in contemporary theatre \u2022Deleuzian re-imaginings and new critical
\nframeworks \u2022postdramatic performance: memory, trauma and tragedy
\n\u2022technological embodiments and shifts in bodily perception \u2022non-places:
\nmorphing spaces and architectural landscapes<\/p>\n
Creative practice responses such as performances, poetry and fiction
\nreadings, and non-traditional presentations are encouraged. The conference
\nwill involve an evening program to include these contributions. Papers and
\nperformances will be limited to 20 minutes. Applications for panels are also
\nwelcome. Please send 300 word abstracts and a short (100 word maximum)

Keynote speaker: Dr Daniel Hourigan, Griffith University<\/p>\n
In 2009 Daniel Hourigan completed a PhD entitled “The Phantasmatic
\nSubject of Technology: Slavoj \u017di\u017eek, Techne, and the Abyss”. He has
\npublished and presented papers on a wide variety of themes and
\ninterdisciplinary topics from psychoanalytic philosophy, radical idealist
\nthought and jurisprudence, the philosophy of culture, and biotechnology. He
\nalso teaches in a variety of areas for Griffith University including art theory
