Web-docs, docu-games,<\/p>\n<p>photo-reportages, trans-media projects and locative narratives are developing<\/p>\n<p>new languages of factual communication that challenge the established linear<\/p>\n<p>narrative of documentary.<\/p>\n<p>i-Docs is the first lab\/symposium to be dedicated to the rapidly evolving field<\/p>\n<p>of interactive documentary. The symposium will be a day-long event to showcase<\/p>\n<p>new projects and to discuss the artistic, economic and political implications of<\/p>\n<p>new forms of factual representation.<\/p>\n<p>In the evening the programme City Symphonies will open with a screening of Jean<\/p>\n<p>Vigo\u2019s 1930 film A propos de Nice, followed by a live response from documentary<\/p>\n<p>film-makers Keith Marley (Liverpool John Moores University) and Geoffrey Cox<\/p>\n<p>(University of Huddersfield).Marley and Cox\u2019s performance will explore the<\/p>\n<p>contemporary relevance of the City Symphony genre, suggesting new audiences for<\/p>\n<p>documentary through live performance, interactivity and VJ culture.<\/p>\n<p>After this we\u2019ll be turning up the tunes and showcasing some more VJ talent!<\/p>\n<p>i-Docs is convened by Judith Aston, Sandra Gaudenzi and Jonathan Dovey on behalf<\/p>\n<p>of the Digital Cultures Research Centre, University of the West of England,<\/p>\n<p>Bristol. The event will be held at the Watershed Media Centre in central Bristol<\/p>\n<p>on Friday, 25th of March 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Participants are invited to present their current projects and research. There<\/p>\n<p>will also be panel discussion, with a view to promoting debate between media<\/p>\n<p>practitioners, commissioning editors, artists and academics.<\/p>\n<p>Proposals for both paper and project presentations should be sent to:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:idocs.symposium@gmail.com\">idocs.symposium@gmail.com<\/a> by Friday 26th of November 2010.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal should clearly outline your intentions in no more than 300 words.<\/p>\n<p>Links to further visual materials can be provided, if appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>Confirmed keynote presentations from: Upian (Prison Valley, Gaza\/Sderot,<\/p>\n<p>Havana\/Miami), Blast Theory (Rider Spoke, Desert Rain, A Machine To See With),<\/p>\n<p>Nick Cohen \u2013 BBC Multiplatform Commissioning Executive for Documentary.<\/p>\n<p>Suggested topics \/ themes:<\/p>\n<p>* what is an interactive documentary?: possible classification methodologies<\/p>\n<p>for a field in constant development<\/p>\n<p>* collaborative media and documentary making: objectivity, activism and shared<\/p>\n<p>authorship through the screens of mobile phones and web 2.0<\/p>\n<p>* user-generated content in documentary practice: the new role of the producer<\/p>\n<p>and possible models of collaboration<\/p>\n<p>* crowd sourcing when documenting reality: possible ethical and political<\/p>\n<p>consequences<\/p>\n<p>* docu-games and mixed-reality games: can games document the real?<\/p>\n<p>* database documentaries: navigational strategies and new possibilities for<\/p>\n<p>representing multiple points of view<\/p>\n<p>* the fine line between new media factual art, collaborative journalism and<\/p>\n<p>interactive documentary<\/p>\n<p>* what does the user think?: how do we user test, or evaluate user experience,<\/p>\n<p>of an i-doc?<\/p>\n<p>* possible financial models for i-docs: who are the financial players and what<\/p>\n<p>do they want?<\/p>\n<p>* case study presentation and\/or analysis of specific i-doc projects<\/p>\n<p>Selected papers will be considered for publication in the Journal of Media<\/p>\n<p>Practice.
