i-Docs – a symposium only about interactive documentary CFP

Posted by on November 23rd, 2010 · related topics

In an era of pervasive computing, social media and a networked ‘information

society’, digital documentary is embracing new forms. Web-docs, docu-games,

photo-reportages, trans-media projects and locative narratives are developing

new languages of factual communication that challenge the established linear

narrative of documentary.

i-Docs is the first lab/symposium to be dedicated to the rapidly evolving field

of interactive documentary. The symposium will be a day-long event to showcase

new projects and to discuss the artistic, economic and political implications of

new forms of factual representation.

In the evening the programme City Symphonies will open with a screening of Jean

Vigo’s 1930 film A propos de Nice, followed by a live response from documentary

film-makers Keith Marley (Liverpool John Moores University) and Geoffrey Cox

(University of Huddersfield).Marley and Cox’s performance will explore the

contemporary relevance of the City Symphony genre, suggesting new audiences for

documentary through live performance, interactivity and VJ culture.

After this we’ll be turning up the tunes and showcasing some more VJ talent!

i-Docs is convened by Judith Aston, Sandra Gaudenzi and Jonathan Dovey on behalf

of the Digital Cultures Research Centre, University of the West of England,

Bristol. The event will be held at the Watershed Media Centre in central Bristol

on Friday, 25th of March 2011.

Participants are invited to present their current projects and research. There

will also be panel discussion, with a view to promoting debate between media

practitioners, commissioning editors, artists and academics.

Proposals for both paper and project presentations should be sent to:

idocs.symposium@gmail.com by Friday 26th of November 2010.

The proposal should clearly outline your intentions in no more than 300 words.

Links to further visual materials can be provided, if appropriate.

Confirmed keynote presentations from: Upian (Prison Valley, Gaza/Sderot,

Havana/Miami), Blast Theory (Rider Spoke, Desert Rain, A Machine To See With),

Nick Cohen – BBC Multiplatform Commissioning Executive for Documentary.

Suggested topics / themes:

* what is an interactive documentary?: possible classification methodologies

for a field in constant development

* collaborative media and documentary making: objectivity, activism and shared

authorship through the screens of mobile phones and web 2.0

* user-generated content in documentary practice: the new role of the producer

and possible models of collaboration

* crowd sourcing when documenting reality: possible ethical and political

consequences

* docu-games and mixed-reality games: can games document the real?

* database documentaries: navigational strategies and new possibilities for

representing multiple points of view

* the fine line between new media factual art, collaborative journalism and

interactive documentary

* what does the user think?: how do we user test, or evaluate user experience,

of an i-doc?

* possible financial models for i-docs: who are the financial players and what

do they want?

* case study presentation and/or analysis of specific i-doc projects

Selected papers will be considered for publication in the Journal of Media

Practice. Several other publication possibilities are also being considered.

CALL FOR CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION PARTICIPATION ? FIRST CALL

WELCOME TO <http://www.ambience11.se/>AMBIENCEZ11

?where art, technology and design meet

An international conference, and exhibition, which welcomes researchers and artists/designers/architects to the University of Borås 28-30 November 2011.

The Ambience conference focuses on the intersections and interfaces between technology, art and design. The first international conference in the Ambience series was held in Tampere, Finland in 2005. In Tampere 2005 the basic theme was ?Intelligent ambience, including intelligent textiles, smart garments, intelligent home and living environment?. In Borås 2008 it was ?Smart Textiles ? Technology & Design? and in Borås 2011 it will be the new expressional crossroads where art, design, architecture and technology meet; digital architecture, interaction design, new media art and smart textiles.

With a foundation in artistic practice the conference will be organized as a meeting place where art, design, architect and technology communities can come together to discuss and share ideas on the interfaces between art and technology development; a place where art, design, architecture and technology can meet and interact, to inform each other, and to bring new ideas back to their own community.

The conference will include sessions for paper presentations as well as an exhibition for the presentation of art, design and architectural work.

We welcome contributions from the areas of art, design and architecture where new technology plays a key role and also contributions from areas of technology where focus is on applications in contemporary art, design and architecture.

Keynote speakers will introduce discussions about, and critical reflections on, the future development of the intersections between artistic practice and technology. Concerts and performances will also display artistic perspectives on modern technology.

The conference is organized by The University of Borås in cooperation with Tampere University of Technology and is a part of the Smart Textiles Initiative ? <http://www.smarttextiles.se/>www.smarttextiles.se

Testing: abridged database for schema design

Posted by on November 18th, 2010 · Uncategorized

We are currently seeking feedback from  Key Users/Contributors about how we are expanding certain areas of data capture in the database. Below is a short (6 min) video in which Jo Croucher (Our Data Manager) and I talk through some of the issues that we are using this abridged version of database to test.  Those of you who have been asked to test this have been sent an email.

Feedback notes:

Friday; Feedback two CIs/Editorial Board Members.

Negative ( which is a good thing when trying to solve a problem!)

Too much information on works? is measurement necessary?

Too many stubs will be generated if we create record files for each ROLE associated with the production of works ( particularly in design)? Ie. we don’t need a record for Kambrook associated with Musset’s kettle. Just need to be able to note that Kambrook  made it. ?

Requests for clear citation policy (I agree but  this is an editorial Board issue- over to you!)

Positive( also useful)

Like the way that works can be dividied into parts- helps with complex works.

Like the way that Roles will now be searchable.   Also appreciate the inclusion of curators and arts professionals.

Appreciate the logic of associating medium with work, rather than a person.  So person  + Role and Medium +work.

Tuesday; CI x2  ( I CI also Ed board)

Measurement is important and should stay as field for design objects. ( 1)

Both want clear citation and additional reading policies.

Issues with category confusion over medium- ie Musset eg. Is Industrial design of the same order as Plastics etc… (totally right- catgeories get covered by TAGs and medium is medium and relates to a specific work.)

Agree that we don’t need records for every associate- we need to define primary roles ( ie Creator, curator etc)  who get full records and secondary roles ( ie Kambrook in the Musset eg) who don’t.
