It had been hoped those units not on the University’s SOE (Standard Operating Environment) would have the TRIM 6.4 client deployed manually. Technical constraints have thwarted this course of action. TRIM, in its current form, only functions within the SOE, the culprit being domain-related access problems.
A solution has been proposed and accepted by the Project Board that alleviates the need to move units onto the SOE before receiving the TRIM 6.4 client.
This solution is to upgrade TRIM 6.4, originally deployed in December 2009, to the latest version – TRIM 7.1. Released in March 2011, TRIM 7.1 features cross-domain log-in functionality, meaning users will not be restricted to the SOE to access the UNSW Production database.
An added bonus of the upgrade to TRIM 7.1 is the release of a new ‘thin’ client. This uses a web browser but still provides full read/write capability to users for electronic records. This will allow units outside of the scope of the project to receive access to electronic recordkeeping in a more timely fashion. It also opens the door to different possible implemenations of TRIM to meet unit needs.
The initial focus however remains on the 2011 Project and deploying TRIM to units within the Division of Research. The timetable for the upgrade process means the schedule has been delayed but it is still expected to be completed on time by the end of 2011. An updated schedule will be published once the upgrade is complete.
The timing for the Graduate Research School and Grants Management Office deployments are also unaffected by this change.
