Ars Bioarctica art&science residency in 2012

Ars Bioarctica is long term art&science program by the Finnish
Society of Bioart together with the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station.

Since 2010 it is organizing an artist-in-residency program at the
Kilpisjärvi Biological Station of the University of Helsinki in
the sub-Arctic Lapland.

The emphasis of the residency is the Arctic environment and art&
science collaboration and is is open for artists and art&science
research teams.

The residency takes place in the facilities of the Kilpisjärvi
Biological Station. It provides the residents with a combined
living and working environment, a basic laboratory, internet
connection and sauna.

The Kilpisjärvi Biological Station offers to the visiting artists
the same possibilities and infrastructure as its scientists and
staff. This includes access to all scientific equipment, laboratory
facilities, the library and seminar room as well as the usage of
field equipment. A dedicated contact person in Kilpisjärvi will
familiarize residents with the local environment and customs.

The basic costs of a residency period which have to be covered by
the applicant include:
* travel to Finland
* travel within Finland to Kilpisjärvi
* accommodation and provisions at the Station.

Applications have to include the desired residency duration, a work
proposal, a working plan with time schedule, the desired residency
outcome, a list of necessities for the work to be carried out and
the artists CV.

The application deadline is 31st of January 2012.

The evaluation of the applications emphasizes the quality of the
proposal, its interaction of art&science, its artistic and or
scientific significance, the projects relation to the thematic
focus of Ars Bioarctica, and its feasibility to be carried out at
the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station in the given time.

3rd and FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS

The Electronic Literature as a Model of Creativity and Innovation in Practice (ELMCIP) research project invites paper and presentation proposals for its conference, Remediating the Social. Selected papers will be presented at the conference in Edinburgh, November 1-3, 2012.

ELMCIP welcomes abstracts of up to 500 words for papers, presentations and group panel sessions that address network and digitally mediated creative practices that effect and reflect upon the role of creativity in social and community formation. Remediating the Social apprehends people and media as interacting generative agents, remediating one another as a vital part of contemporary social space. Papers that reflect upon “born digital” literary and artistic practice within the context of cultural formation are especially welcome. Papers might present theoretical positions, case studies or artist’s presentations, as well as other forms. We welcome proposals for panel discussions on specific topics that engage the conference theme.

Remediating the Social will be hosted at Edinburgh College of Art (eca) of the University of Edinburgh, in collaboration with New Media Scotland and University College Falmouth. The conference will be held at eca. An associated exhibition will be held at Inspace, a purpose-built research and exhibition facility in the University of Edinburgh’s School of Informatics, fully instrumented to facilitate engagement with developments in new technologies, scientific research and creative practice. The exhibition will continue after the conference for three weeks.

The conference programme will consist of paper presentations, across a range of disciplines and modes of inquiry, addressing examples of creative communities that have formed around various practices, media and discourses. Case studies, papers and panels, including examples arising from the ELMCIP project and other contexts, will be presented. The conference will be web-cast, allowing for remote attendees to monitor events and put questions to conference via a live public feed, employing mediating technologies within the event. Conference proceedings will be peer reviewed and published, with ISBN.

About ELMCIP
Electronic Literature as a Model of Creativity and Innovation in Practice (ELMCIP) is a three year collaborative research project running from 2010-2013, funded by the Humanities in the European Research Area Joint Research Programme for Creativity and Innovation. ELMCIP involves seven European academic research partners and one non-academic partner who are investigating how creative communities of practitioners form within transnational and transcultural contexts in globalized and distributed communications environments. Focusing on the electronic literature community in Europe, as a model of networked creativity and innovation in practice, ELMCIP studies the formation and interactions of that community and seeks to further electronic literature research and practice in Europe. The project partners are The University of Bergen, Edinburgh College of Art, Blekinge Institute of Technology, The University of Amsterdam, The University of Ljubljana, The University of Jyväskylä,, University College Falmouth and New Media Scotland.

Abstracts of papers should be of no more than 500 words and/or two pages of A4 in PDF format (11 point). A biographical statement of no more than 250 words (one page A4, 11 point) should be included (additional to the abstract word count).

Abstracts must be sent as a single PDF file and not exceed 4 megabytes in size. They should include clear indication of technical and resource requirements as well as duration and space requirements (if applicable). Submissions will only be accepted electronically and to the email address below.

Portugal hosts The Planetary Collegium’s 12th Annual international Research Conference, a network of researchers focused in the crossings of art, science, technology and consciousness studies, founded by Roy Ascott.

CR12 will be a three days forum for transdisciplinary discussion in Lisbon, gathering more than sixty artists, designers, architects, performers, musicians, scientists, writers and researchers from about 20 different countries. Featuring special guests José Manuel Anes, Lusitana Fonseca, Stephan A. Schwartz and guest artists Marta de Menezes, Leonel Moura, António Cerveira Pinto e Emanuel Pimenta.

The conference will look at art as behaviour of mind, embedded in the physical world, but articulating its immateriality. Just as institutionalized art, with its tired orthodoxies of instruction, production and distribution, is challenged by the new technologies of knowing and perception, so our sense of self – its singularity and authenticity – is open to reconstruction and reinterpretation. Transdisciplinary discourse, the adoption of new technologies, the invisible forces and fields of the sciences, the recuperation of abandoned metaphysical and spiritual models of being, can all find expression within the context of this conference.

Requirements: teaching four courses per year and active in research and service.

Successful applicants will have a tenure home in a single humanities
or arts department,
but it is expected that their research and teaching interests will be broadly
interdisciplinary (perhaps bridging different schools within the
University). This position
is open to scholars and creative artists across the humanities and
arts, including cultural
studies and linguistics, art history, creative writing, dance, film
and media studies, music,
theater and visual arts.

The successful candidate will engage in innovative explorations of
interfaces among the
arts, science, and technology. Possible areas of focus for this
position might include (but
are not limited to): architecture and design, digital arts (animation,
music, dance, media
imagery, theater and visual arts); the global dynamics of new media;
social media, online
cultures and identities; perception, cognition, and neuroscience of
art; computational
analysis and computational theory of art; and historical and
theoretical perspectives on
sciences/arts relationships.

This position is one of several new faculty appointments in the
humanities made possible
by support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. These interdisciplinary
appointments seek to advance humanistic inquiry by applying its
traditional principles to
new fields of study and by examining traditional areas of research and

of new approaches.

In 2012, Subtle Technologies celebrates our 15th anniversary with our annual
Festival.

For 15 years Subtle Technologies has been bringing people together to
promote wonder, incite creativity and spark innovation across disciplines.
Our symposium, performances, workshops, screenings, exhibitions and
networking sessions provide a forum to explore ideas and pose questions at
the intersection of art, science and technology. Subtle Technologies is
known internationally for presenting work by artists and scientists at the
leading edge of their respective disciplines.

Our 2012 festival takes place from May 24 to May 27 2012 at various venues
throughout Toronto. Our annual open call accepts submissions that bridge
art, science and technology. This year we are also accepting submissions for
a themed session which explores work inspired by biology, as outlined below.
For both streams we are soliciting proposals from all disciplines and also
welcome topics that explore ways of knowing that are outside of the western
framework.

We are interested in receiving submissions from individuals as well as
interdisciplinary teams and collaborative projects. We would like to present
successful stories from artists and scientists working together. We are
equally interested in hearing about the issues that inhibit disciplines from

Art&HENVI – Open call for artists to work with the Helsinki University
Centre For Environmental Research

Art&HENVI is organized by the Finnish Society of Bioart in collaboration
with the Helsinki University Centre For Environmental Research (HENVI)
in the context of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012.

We are looking for three artists or artist groups who are interested and
capable of working along one of three newly started research groups of
HENVI over the period of one year:
