Hybrid City is an international biennial event dedicated to exploring the emergent character of the city and the potential transformative shift of the urban condition, as a result of ongoing developments in information and communication technologies (ICTs) and of their integration in the urban physical context. After the successful homonymous symposium in 2011, the second edition of Hybrid City has grown into a peer reviewed conference, aiming to promote dialogue and knowledge exchange among experts drawn from academia, as well as artists, designers, researchers, advocates, stakeholders and decision makers, actively involved in addressing questions on the nature of the technologically mediated urban activity and experience.

Hybrid City Conference 2013, in Athens, Greece, will consist of three days of paper presentations, discussions, workshops and satellite events, under the theme “Subtle rEvolutions”. The events will be hosted by the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and are in particular organized by the University Research Institute of Applied Communication (URIAC), in collaboration with the New Technologies Laboratory of the faculty. The main venue of the conference is the central, historic building of the University of Athens, while workshops, projects’ presentations and parallel events will take place in collaborating centers and institutions in the center of Athens.

Theme – Subtle rEvolutions

ICTs, whether mobile, wireless or embedded in persistent architectural forms, facilitate the collection and dissemination of data, infusing the physical expression of the city with digital layers of content, contributing thus to the emergence of new hybridized spatial logics and novel forms of social interaction. These systems and the hybrid spatial experience they afford, encourage encounters among users; both embodied and mediated, and influence community dynamics, giving rise to networks around common interests and collectives of affect. Sometimes, such groups, irrespective of how ephemeral, unstable and dispersed they may be, negotiate a new kind of engagement with the urban environment and civic life, suggesting thus an organizational paradigm that manages to surpass traditional vertical hierarchies of space and consequently of power and control. Such configurations among communities, locations, contexts and intentions were manifested intensely in the interlinking of protest events around the world since 2011, the Arab Spring uprisings, the Occupy movement and anti-austerity demonstrations in Southern Europe, but they also gradually permeate everyday life in the contemporary metropolis.

As sharing and collaborative tactics migrate from online culture to the urban realm and ICTs become increasingly open and personalized, rich opportunities for new forms of participation in civic life arise. Citizens are enabled to access information about the city but also to become involved in the production, collection and distribution of data related to urban matters. The Hybrid City Conference considers a further investigation of such processes of crucial importance, so as to gain a deeper understanding of the effect they have on the urban experience and to explore their contribution in shaping the future cities. In this respect, Hybrid City cordially invites papers both of a theoretical and practical approach that present concepts, case studies, projects, works of art and best practices that promote the discussion on the theme. Emphasizing the inherently interdisciplinary nature of technologically mediated urban activity, we welcome proposals which critically examine, but are not limited to, the following topics:

• Open cities, open urban data.
• Environmental sensing and the Internet of things.
• Urban data visualization.
• Environmental perception, cognition, immersion and presence in the context of hybrid urban spaces.
• Citizen science and peer production of knowledge.
• Psychosocial perspectives into the impact of locative and pervasive media use.
• Placemaking, place attachment and place identity in the hybrid city.
• Cartography of hybrid spaces.
• Mobile commons and wireless practices.
• Public spaces and mediated presence.
• Gamifying the urban space: playful engagement and game-like citizenship.
• Hybrid spaces of conflict: forms of power and counterpower in the networked city.
• Tactical media practices in the urban context.
• From open data to data commons.
• Open source models of policy and governance.
• Emerging currencies and values.
• Issues of data ownership and copyrights in hybrid urban contexts.

• Eric Kluitenberg, independent theorist and writer on culture, media, and technology, editor in chief of Tactical Media Files, an online documentation resource of Tactical Media practices worldwide.

All accepted papers will be included in the printed conference proceedings.

Submissions should include:
* Extended abstract of 1000 words max.
* Biographical statement of no more than 250 words.

“The 3rd Art and Science International Exhibition and Symposium will be held at China National Science and Technology Museum from Nov., 1st to Nov., 30th, 2012. As from today, the Organizing Committee invites from society the academic papers limited to the following contents and contains all the papers collected as a whole for publishing.

I. Subject
Information  Ecology  Intelligence
In the information era, the changing science and technology propel the human society forward, where the ecological civilization indicates the sustainable evolution of human living style and the human intelligence carries out the grand humanistic ideals with innovative values.
From the perspectives of information science, life science and ecological science, the exhibition and symposium, integrated with existing diverse ideas and art forms and carried by artistic esthetics, bio-information technology and ecological intelligence, focuses on the ultimate ideals and spirits of human being, explores the unknown and create the future with new thoughts and methods.

II Requirements on Paper
1. The paper should never be openly published on formal publications.
2. The paper should conform to the subject of the 3rd Art and Science International Exhibition and Symposium.
3. The paper is required to be prominent in subject, definite in argument, succinct in style, and characterized by contemporary significance, original values and certain depth of thought.
4. Papers collected will be reviewed by the Academic Council of the organizing committee and those selected will be compiled into a paper collection of this Symposium (no different notice will be given to those lost in the selection).
5. The paper may be submitted in either Chinese or English, with the words limited to 5000, wherein the title, abstract (about 200-300 words) and key words (no more than 5), are required to be provided both in Chinese and English, wherever the author thereof comes from.

III Submission of Paper
1. The paper is required to be typeset with Word software and submitted by e-mail with the filename named after the title (name of the first author). No handwritten or printed paper is accepted.
2. The information, including author’s name, telephone, work unit, address and e-mail, etc., is required to be indicated at the end of the paper for the convenience of timely contact.

Leonardo Electronic Almanac presents its second catalog Dislocations available on Amazon. Dislocations showcases the artworks that were exhibited on the Media Facade of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb and part of the 12th Istanbul biennial. The catalog sees the collaboration of several international institutions: Kasa Gallery, ISEA2011 Istanbul, Goldsmiths College and Sabanci University. INTERNATIONAL SHARED RESIDENCY

A COLLABORATION BETWEEN EYEBEAM (US) AND BALTAN LABORATORIES (NL)

For artists, shared residencies offer a context that’s more than simply time and space to work. By residing at each partner organization, time and space is multiplied across locations and each location brings its own culture to the work. In this case, the collaborative potential between Baltan Laboratories in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and Eyebeam Art + Technology Center in New York City is exponentially increased – both organizations are deeply committed to supporting the process of artistic creation from early stages through to the end project. This collaborative residency is organized around the theme of “Cultural Economies” with the goal of instigating new work that critically examines the ability of artists and artistic production to maintain large cultural relevance in an age of increasingly limited resources.

The timeline for this collaborative residency is as follows:

Sept. 17 – Nov. 18, in residence at Eyebeam (housing not provided);

Nov. 19 – Dec. 21, in residence at Baltan Laboratories, in collaboration with the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven (NL) (housing provided);

Dec. 14 – 15, presentation of working prototype at an international symposium around collecting and presenting digitally born art in the museum, a collaboration between Baltan Laboratories and the Van Abbemuseum;

Dec. 22 – Feb. 18, 2013, in residence at Eyebeam with presentation of final work in exhibition.

The selected artist(s) will receive paid transportation, a production budget, and a modest fee.

Please note, this is a different program than a standard Eyebeam residency so stipend and budget differs.

For this residency focus area, the following must be agreeable to the selected artist:

– The artist must be willing to openly and thoroughly document the artistic process.

– The work should be created using open source software;

– The artist should have experience working in collaborative settings with people from different disciplines.

Please note: only artists and technologists who can commit to the working timeline should apply. Also, please include in the application (under the “Additional Info. section”) the motivation for why you would like to work in the context of this particular residency.

VIDA Art and Artificial Life International Awards begun in 1999 by Fundación Telefónica, was created with the mission of supporting creative endeavours in this singular field by rewarding the pioneering efforts of artists. We are now pleased to announce the launch of the VIDA 14.0, which for the last 14 years have been rewarding artistic projects developed with technological media that offer innovative insights into the study of artificial life.

At a time when the concept of life finds itself once again in uncharted territory, a wide range of artistic initiatives attempt to illustrate and explore this phenomenon, examining its impact on our collective consciousness and how it affects the cultural, technological and social mindset.

Over the past decade, VIDA has welcomed a variety of interdisciplinary projects that respond to this situation and brought them together in a single forum. Using formal strategies that push the boundaries between existing practices, these projects offer new perspectives that force us to reconsider our pre-existing notions of life and artificial life.

What types of projects receive a VIDA 14.0?
The VIDA Award is granted to artistic creations developed using artificial life technology. Among the projects submitted to VIDA, the artists’ ties to this theme and their choice of media are very diverse. Throughout its history, the competition has welcomed proposals that challenge the boundary between living and non-living, between natural and synthetic, either by juxtaposing both realities or by creating overlapping spaces for reflection.
The winning projects include robotic systems, immersive installations, online video games, autonomous self-organising devices and evolutionary indicators. Another common characteristic of past winners is the use of interactive and immersive installations—a response to today’s environment of technological entities—which attempt to communicate with visitors by making them part of the system. Chimerical devices that combine natural and artificial elements, telepresence systems, network structures that operate as artificial intelligences, invasive dynamics of increasing complexity and acumen—these are just some of the themes addressed by the artists who participate in VIDA. From the very first edition to the present day, we have rewarded artists who have applied traditional artificial life technologies to their work, such as cellular automata, autonomous agents, neural networks, robotics, interactive systems, virtual ecologies and evolving software. What all of these projects have in common is that they involve emergent behaviours which grow more sophisticated over time, react with their environment and seem to show signs of autonomous life.
In recent years we have observed an increasing hybridisation of media and formats among the projects submitted to VIDA, which has led us to advocate the category’s expansion in order to trace the evolution of this field. The competition has gradually extended its scope, maintaining its interest in projects that involve conventional artificial life research while also venturing into new, cutting-edge territories such as life sciences and environmental sciences. In short, we could say that VIDA rewards artistic projects that are related to any dynamic life process affected by simulation.

As in previous years, contestants are invited to submit proposals in one of two categories:
CATEGORY “FINALISED PROJECTS”
In this category, Vida 14.0 rewards artistic artificial life projects developed after the year 2010. A total of 40,000 euros will be divided among the three winning projects chosen by the jury: First Prize: 18,000 euros; Second Prize: 14,000 euros; Third Prize: 8,000 euros. Seven honorary mentions will also be awarded to projects chosen by the jury from among the finalists.
CATEGORY “INCENTIVES FOR PRODUCTION”
In this category, Vida 14.0 helps to finance artistic artificial life projects that have not yet been produced. It is reserved for artists who are citizens or residents of any country in Latin America, Spain or Portugal. This category is also endowed with 40,000 euros to be divided among the selected projects.

Project submissions must be submitted before midnight (Central European Time) on 30th July 2012.

JURY

Do you have something original to say about our world that is increasingly
fuzzy, unstable and chaotic? Are you interested in how crisis, uncertainty
and complexity can come together in order to question the known as well as
predict and/or model yet unknown? Do you want to share projects
intrinsically linking domains of scientific, artistic and technological
research and creativity that can be introduced as relevant tools for better
understanding of our common future?

The aim of this Call for Abstracts is to provide opportunity for community
of interdisciplinary practitioners to get engaged in a transformative
conversation on mutant futures.

Feel free to address conference Attractors and respond to a specific stream
of interest in order to get involved with other interested individuals and
collectives in structured collaborative efforts before, during, and
hopefully also after the conference. Research groups formed by the
Attractors -who serve as the Reviewers- will be expected to elaborate on the
general theme Tribute to Uncertainty while turning attention to concrete
research objectives as defined by the streams.

The results should be curated panels, roundtables, workshops as well as
publications.

Priority will be given to innovative and challenging proposals.

EMF 2012 CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

About the Event

Electromagnetic Field 2012 is a three-day camping festival in the UK
for people with an inquisitive mind and an interest in science,
engineering, DIY, technology, arts, or crafts. It will be a cross
between a tech conference and a music festival, with talks and
workshops on a wide range of subjects. A great opportunity to meet
like-minded people, to learn, to teach, to play, and have a drink with
a stranger. A festival for anyone interested in 3D printing, DIYBio,
textiles, electronics, Internet culture, music hacking, space,
lockpicking, homebrewing, computer security, robots, UAVs, mind
hacking, radio, and pretty much anything else you can think of… in a
field!

Talks

A 1h presentation about a topic in science, engineering, DIY,
technology, arts, or crafts. The allocated time includes Q&A, setup,
and teardown.

Workshops

A 1h, 2h, or 3h workshop involving practices in science, engineering,
DIY, technology, arts, or crafts. The allocated time includes setup
and teardown.

We hope to have enough desk space and chairs for everyone, but details
are yet to be determined. If you prefer to hold open-ended workshops
then we encourage you to start or join a village: see below for
details.

Performances

Musical performances, DJ sets, artistic performances, general evening
entertainment, …

We will provide a stage area in a tent and a basic PA.

Villages

Villages are dedicated camping areas for particular groups, with
shared access to power and Internet. You can form a village for your
local hackerspace, art form, project, or any other community. This
makes it easier for people to get to know each other and encourages
collaboration while at the festival, be it for cooking sessions or to
build ambitious installations.

Venue Details

EMF 2012 is a camping festival in a field. The venue is Pineham Park,
near Milton Keynes in the UK.

We plan to have two event tents with an audience capacity of about 100
each, both with access to power and Internet, each with a projector,
and at least one of the tents will have a PA for larger presentations.
We also aim to have camp-wide wifi, and ethernet ports in key
locations.

We will attempt to stream the talks and performances and publish the
recordings after the event.

Budget and Travel expenses

The EMF camp is a non-profit event produced entirely by volunteers,
and speakers are not paid. Unfortunately we can not subsidise your
entry ticket, and we do not have a travel budget for contributors
either; due to the nature of the event we expect that everyone pays.
We may be able to make a few very rare exceptions, but don’t count on
it.

Dates and Deadlines

The deadline for submission is Friday 29 June 2012, 23:59 UTC.
Notification of acceptance will be sent by e-mail as early as
possible, but on Friday 13 July 2012 the latest.

Electromagnetic Field 2012 is held between Friday 31 August and Sunday
2 September 2012.
