Summer School in Frankfurt – Development Finance

The Summer School allows Bachelor students in the final year of their studies or Master students with a knowledge of the area of Finance to develop their development finance skills in one of Europe’s leading financial centres: Frankfurt am Main.

When you opt for this course you are also choosing to benefit from the immediate proximity of prestigious financial institutions such as the European Central Bank (EZB) and the German Central Bank (Deutsche Bundesbank). Staged on the Frankfurt School campus over two weeks in July 2012, the Summer School will combine a challenging academic programme with the opportunity to network with and enjoy the company of your fellow students.

Content & Objectives
The Summer School is designed to expose students to some of the problems and challenges involved in the field of development finance. The programme delivers an introduction to the topic: What is development finance and microfinance? You will work on case studies in small groups, e. g. on microbanking in Mexico; you will discuss projects in the area of fund models; you will meet with practitioners in the area of microfinance; and you will get to visit organisations such as the KfW or GIZ.

Credits: 5 ECTS
Costs: EUR 2,500 course fee – including company visits and cultural trips (additional living expenses, e.g. accommodation, local transport and food will add another EUR 500 – 750 for the two weeks)

Frankfurt has plenty to offer visitors – it is a lively city, with a profusion of cultural activities to suit all tastes. Regardless of your preferred leisure pursuits – museums, concerts, opera, cinema or theatre – you will find plenty of interesting events happening in Frankfurt, with something new to see, listen to, experience and appreciate every day. The Alte Oper, Städel and Schirn Kunsthalle are all cultural venues with global reputations, ready to inspire you with the finest in music and art.

Excursions to Heidelberg and the Rheingau
The Summer School is undeniably about work and learning – but this doesn’t mean your two-week stay won’t also be enjoyable. Besides seeing the sights in Frankfurt, you will also join a trip to Heidelberg, where the attractions include the world-famous castle, the vibrant student scene, many fine restaurants, shopping opportunities and cultural offerings.

Frankfurt also is close to Germany’s famous wine-growing region, the Rheingau. Students will get to visit the monastery in Eberbach where the film “Name of the Rose” was shot. Along with one of the most famous and best preserved cloisters, the monastery also owns the renowned “Steinberg” vineyards, where Cistercian monks ran a prosperous business back in the Middle Ages.
