Returning from Centres to Periphery – The Power of Emerging Cultural Communities in Europe.

June 1 – 7 | FH Kufstein Tirol | Palea Epidavros | Greece

For many years attention has focused on the cultural development of big cities including Rome, Paris, London, New York or Rio de Janeiro. Demographic changes show that many people move from the so-called peripheries of their countries to the centres, so do also many artists and arts managers. But there is also a movement in the other direction. Smaller cities like Portland, Oregon in the USA, Linz in Austria, Pafos on Cyprus etc. create innovative cultural climates and spaces which attract especially young people to these underestimated peripheries. New neighborhood communities, art spaces, galleries, museums, experiential labs appear in these smaller cities and come up as seeds for a new local movement within the globalization – presenting a power which is strong enough to attract global attention.

The 5th Kufstein Summer School will invite important protagonists (artists, arts manager, curators, committed citizens, and others involved in local community cultural development) from these scenes to share their knowledge, their innovative concepts, and their passion for a local culture which is no longer just a regional phenomenon but has global impact.
