The Mishpatim Seminar in Israeli and International Law

Dates: January 12th 2014 – January 30th 2014.

Language: English

About: The word “Mishpatim” is Hebrew for “law”. The Seminar is an intensive program (45 academic hours). Since its inception in 1993, the Seminar has undoubtedly been the Hebrew University’s most popular program for Australian university students. In 2009, a record number of 72 students from universities across Australia participated. The Seminar is taught in English by leading Israeli academics, legal practitioners and judges. Particular attention is devoted to issues at the forefront of the Israeli legal system, including the search for a constitution, human rights and terrorism, and the interplay between international law and domestic law. In previous years, the program has included field trips to the Supreme Court of Israel, the Knesset (Parliament of Israel), a legal aid clinic for Jewish women who have been refused a religious divorce, Rabbinical and Military Courts and more.

Participants are required to complete formal examinations, which in previous years have included research essays, a written examination and/or an oral examination. At the conclusion of the program, participants are issued with an official academic transcript by HUJI.

Financial Assistance: Pursuing overseas study opportunities often attract considerable expense. Thankfully, through the support of our donors, the Australian Friends of the Hebrew University is able and willing to provide financial assistance to Australians accepted to study or conduct research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Financial assistance is awarded on the basis of academic merit, financial need or community involvement.
