FASStrack Asia: the Summer School

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) at The National University of Singapore will be offering FASStrack Asia: the Summer School from 22 June to 25 July in 2015.

As one of the most modern and dynamic countries in the world, Singapore with its multi-cultural society is ideally positioned as a transnational hub within Asia, the fastest-growing region in the world today. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, with its tradition of excellent teaching and strong research in Asian studies, is well poised to impart the critical skills necessary to understand this complex and vitally-important region. As Asia undergoes rapid developments, this summer school will offer a spotlight on the region for your better understanding of various related topics and issues.

Taught over a 5-week summer period you will attend classes, participate in active discussions and go on field trips with academic experts. We offer courses in different disciplines such as Sociology, Political Science, Food Science, Cultural studies as well as in Economics with special emphasis on various Asian regions. There are also Asian language classes on offer. Some of these courses feature an 8 to 10 days’ field trip to countries such as China, Japan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar and Thailand, as well as local field trips in Singapore. In addition, you will be joined by international students from top universities all over the world for the summer school.

Highlights of the program include:

  • Study at NUS, a world-class university in Singapore – a cosmopolitan hub of Asia
  • Many courses with a 8-10 day field trip to a country in Asia
  • Local Singapore field trips
  • Experiential learning outside classroom
  • Language studies for in-depth field trip immersion
  • On-campus residential college experience
  • Study & live with NUS and international students from overseas partner universities

Fees

For students who are nominated by UNSW under an exchange arrangement with NUS, the tuition fee may be waived. Students receiving a credit transfer will instead be enrolled at UNSW and pay UNSW course fees. Costs for accommodation, field trips, flights etc. will be borne by the student.

Scholarships

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) at UNSW has been able to secure funding for 10 scholarships of $3,000 each for Australian students through the Department of Education – Asia Bound Program.

Credit

All transfer of credit is at the Faculty’s discretion. Credit transfer may apply to some majors / minors in the BA program.

For students who are nominated by UNSW under an exchange arrangement with NUS, the NUS tuition fee may be waived and students may receive credit transfer back to their UNSW program.

Application and Deadlines

UNSW students who would like to apply must complete the UNSW GEP Application and the Intensive Transfer of Credit Form (in order to receive credit for the course) and return to advisor4globaled@unsw.edu.au. Applications close on Monday 9th March 2015.
