Airbus Issues Student Challenge

Posted by on April 9th, 2012 · Uncategorized

French-based aviation giant Airbus wants students worldwide to start thinking big and green and develop ideas to address the key issues facing the industry (energy, energy efficiency, affordable growth, traffic growth, passenger experience, and community friendliness) as part of the ‘Fly Your Ideas’ (FYI) student challenge.

Charles Champion, Executive Vice President Engineering at Airbus and FYI 2013 patron, said some solutions will require thinking out of the box and that Airbus works in a world of solutions for seemingly impossible challenges like those that made air travel a reality. His goal is to get students to adopt that innovative spirit in FYI 2013.

University students of any nationality or discipline, from engineering to marketing, business to science, information technology to design, can apply for FYI 2013.

To enter, students must register a team of three to five members at the Airbus FYI 2013 website. Registration opens in May 2012, when details of the challenge will be revealed. The competition begins in September 2012, with the final in June 2013, when the top selected teams will present their ideas to a panel of Airbus and industry experts. The winners of FYI 2013 will share EUR30 000 (A$38 000); the runners-up EUR15 000 (A$19 000).

FYI 2011 drew entries from more than 2600 students from 287 universities and 75 countries. ‘Team Wings of Phoenix’ from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in China won with their wind power generation system that exploits the wakes of aircraft during takeoff and landing.

UNSW Teams who register for this challenge must notify the UNSW Global Education and Student Exchange Office at advisor4globaled@unsw.edu.au.
