Call for projects and presentations due midnight November 25th 2017 NZT
It is hard to imagine a more important moment than now, to consider the issues of peace and the environment. At a time where moderate Muslims align themselves with peace while militants seek war and the US is extending warmongering worldwide, now is a significant moment for leadership in regard to Peace.
The community of Parihaka through its founding prophets Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kakahi has played a leadership role internationally, nationally, regionally and locally many times since it’s founding in 1866.
SCANZ2018: Peace, Water, Power represents a significant engagement with the community of Parihaka in terms of the creative projects enabled on the papakainga and the hui which culminates the event. SCANZ2018: Peace, Water, Power will have international, national, regional and local participation, part of the recognition of place.
The event consists of an extended residency (double 2016), workshops open to the community, public presentation of projects at Parihaka papakainga, and a hui. After the 2016 event, it was asked that consideration be given to projects that engage with the wai at Parihaka.
We seek creative projects and hui presentations (papers, performances, creative interventions, provocations, reflective sessions) on the topics of Peace and Water. Creative projects and hui presentations that use alternative sources of energy (solar, wind, breath, water) are encouraged.
SCANZ was inaugurated in 2006 and remains the longest standing arts, culture and technology event in Aotearoa.
Professional development residency strand
2018 sees the introduction of a PD strand, so that people can attend the residency and engage in the creative and cultural atmosphere while developing their own research. These attendees would not ordinarily present creative projects as part of attendance, unless core themes involved Peace, Water or Power. PD activities can be variable in length.
Hui (symposium) and Leonardo 50th celebration
A two day hui will occur on Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th of February. It will commence at Parihaka with a Tangata Whenua Peace address, followed by a tour of creative projects.
The hui then travels to New Plymouth for the Leonardo Journal 50th celebrations. Roger Malina will create a special video for the event and will join us from Texas.
We would be interested in presentations on the event themes and for next 50 years for art, science, culture and technology, potentially covering subjects such as protocols around the use of AI, intercultural and interdisciplinary activity. Understanding contemporary knowledge is also a topic of interest.
Nina Czegledy will be delivering a keynote on the subject of engaging across cultures particularly with indigenous peoples, going back to the 1990’s. This groundbreaking work has messages for the future. Day two of the hui involves a walking symposium along the Huatoki stream to the sea.

Application process
Applications require a maximum 200 word abstract; a bio of up to 200 words, plus an up to 1000 maximum word Project Description. Creative projects must have at least one associated image, and presentation submissions where possible. Selected projects and presentations will have the abstract and descriptions placed online along with images. The abstract text should also be submitted in the Abstract field of the online application form.
A word or pdf document containing the Abstract, Bio, Project Description and Image as applicable should be uploaded as a separate file.
Please state if you have your own transportation accommodation in Taranaki – this is important to planning.
