The Ritsumeikan Summer Japanese Program (RSJP) and Ritsumeikan Winter Japanese Program (RWJP) are designed for undergraduate or graduate students with minimal knowledge of the Japanese language, and aim at providing a comprehensive introduction to Japanese language and culture.

These programs are held in the ancient city of Kyoto, known for its traditional festivals such as “Gion Matsuri,” one of the largest and most famous in Japan. It is home to many UNESCO World Heritage Sites, of which the famous Ryoanji Temple and Golden Pavilion are located within walking distance of Ritsumeikan. At the same time as being an ancient city with a rich cultural heritage, the city of Kyoto is also progressive and modern. The old and the new aspects of Kyoto co-exist in perfect harmony which provides program participants a unique learning environment for short-term intensive language study and the opportunity to experience cultural exchange and exploration.

MADE by the Opera House: Multidisciplinary Australian Danish Exchange

Posted by on September 26th, 2013 · 2014, Built Environment, Engineering, Scholarship Opportunities, Short courses, UNSW Summer Break

Eligibility: Australian students of Architecture, Engineering and Design (in the Built Environment) in 3rd year or above.

Program period: 6 January to 23 February.

Language of Instruction: English.

Scholarship Value: AU$6,000

In honour of Sydney Opera House’s 40th Anniversary celebrations in October 2013, the Opera House and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, with the support of Australian and Danish sponsors, have established the Multidisciplinary Australian Danish Exchange, or MADE by the Opera House.

About MADE

MADE by the Opera House will promote international and cross-disciplinary interaction between students of engineering, architecture and design (of the built environment). As well as providing multidisciplinary experience for Australian and Danish students, the program will foster cultural links between the two countries. This is particularly fitting as it complements the role that Danish architect Jørn Utzon played in the innovative design and construction of the Opera House.

The Program

Each year, ten students in the fields of architecture, engineering and design (of the built environment) will participate in the MADE by the Opera House program. Five students from an Australian university based in NSW and five students from a Danish university will be selected for a six-week exchange program to Denmark and Australia respectively. Australian students will travel to Denmark in January-February, and Danish students will travel to Australia in July-August. In 2014, the program for the Australian students will run from 6 January to 23 February. Broadly, the curriculum will include:

• Placement at various engineering and/or architecture firms to work in a collaborative team on a multidisciplinary project, including Henning Larsen Architects;

• A visit to a performing arts or cultural centre

• A visit to other significant works of architecture, including works by Jørn Utzon;

• Completion of a collaborative multidisciplinary project designed around the Utzon Design Principles
